As a goalie in lacrosse and soccer, Mackesey was a two-time All-America and All-Ivy first team selection as Cornell posted back-to-back NCAA Division I lacrosse titles. He was the recipient of the C.M. Kelly Jr. Memorial Award as the outstanding goalie in Division I in both 1976 and 1977. A tri-captain of the laxers as a senior, he was also selected captain of the North squad in the North-South all-star game. In soccer, he was an All-Ivy first team pick in 1975 and was the recipient of the Nicky Bawlf Memorial Award as the squad's MVP in 1976 while captaining the team. In 1977 he was the recipient of one of the Today's Top Five Awards, given by the NCAA, which recognizes athletic ability and achievement, academic excellence and character and leadership abilities. Mackesey is a native Ithacan.
