Martin lettered in football in 1941 and 1946 as fullback, earning honorable mention All-America honors both seasons. In between, Martin spent two years in the Navy as a combat pilot. Martin was the football team's MVP as a sophomore. He earned honorable mention All-East accolades in both 1941 and 1946. Martin carried 50 times for 185 yards and two touchdowns, lettering both seasons. He captained the 1946 season. Martin played baseball as a freshman
