A four-year letterman in football, Loynd was a starting defensive tackle on the 1944, 1945, 1948 and 1949 teams. He helped the Big Red to 8-1 records in both 1948 and ’49. In 1949 he received Associated Press All-America honorable mention honors. During the 1948 and ’49 seasons, he was nominated for lineman of the week three times. Loynd was the University heavyweight boxing champion in 1948.
