He was a three-time Hepatgonal track and field champion, winning the indoor 35-pound weight throw title in 1956 with a throw of 63-3 1/4 that set the Heps and national intercollegiate record. He also won the outdoor Heps hammer throw in 1955 and again in 1956, setting the Heps record with a throw of 190-9. He won the weight throw at the indoor IC4A championships in 1956 with a 62-8 1/2 throw that set the meet record. He tied for first place in the hammer throw at the outdoor IC4As in 1956. Hall won the hammer throw at the 1956 Penn Relays with a meet record throw of 190-7 1/2. He placed second in the hammer at the 1956 outdoor NCAA championships. The captain of the 1955-56 team, he was the recipient of the Gatling Award, given to the senior who has done the most for Cornell track, and was named The Cornell Daily Sun Athlete of the Year for 1956. He competed in the hammer throw in four consecutive Olympic Games from 1956-68.
