Watkins was a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1991, the same year he earned first-team All-Ivy League honors unanimously at defensive back. Watkins earned Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week once as a junior, intercepting a pass and breaking up another, collecting five tackles and recovering a fumble in a win over Columbia. He competed in the Epson Ivy Bowl in December of 1991 against a team of Japanese all-stars in Tokyo, intercepting a pass in the game. He set a school record for kickoff returns in a season and game as a senior.
