Chavez wrestled just one full season for the Big Red, placing seventh at NCAAs at 165 pounds to earn All-America honors. He won the EIWA title to qualify for his first nationals and concluded the season with a 24-6 record and was an honorable mention All-Ivy League pick after wrestling in just one conference dual meet.
